9 a.m. President, Tim Placey opened the meeting thanking all for attending and for supporting the Association in the many different aspects.
Kathy Hussey read the Secretary’s Report from July 12, 2008. Joe Morris motioned the report be accepted; Don Sillars seconded; motion carried.
Kathy Barrett read the present Treasurer’s Report. Joe Morris motioned that the report be accepted; Dennis Gallant seconded; motion carried.
Tim Placey reported that the Buoy Program has been implemented with a total investment of approximately $700 by the Association. The anchors are provided by the State. Peter Brawn donated lobster line for attachment to the buoys. The buoys were in place within 48 hours of ice out. One buoy has already come up missing and has been replaced. Thus, there are presently ten in place with two extras available. One was recently placed in the area of Dennis Gallant’s property and may or may not remain. Tim asked that if anyone knows of areas of concern that they notify him.
Liability signs have been placed at both boat launches indicating that it is possible that not all hazards are marked.
Tim said that the Welcome Back Social at the Lind’s was well attended. The food was great and it was nice to see some new people attend.
The Roadside Spring Water Testing continues with the Townspeople authorizing the same funding as last year ($600).
Tim said he spoke with Scott Williams who indicates it would be a good idea to increase the testing of the Pond to at least twice a year. Tim said one test costs $870 and the second is likely to cost $3-400 more. He made the decision to do so. Bob Weiss asked what the test results show. Tim responded that it shows such things as the temperature of the water, the variety of fish and phosphorous levels. Tim provided a copy of the most recent test to Weiss. Dennis Gallant asked where the Pond stands. Dave Clement responded that it is above average with phosphorous being a major concern for algae blooms. He added that the tests show trends, etc.
Tim said he anticipates doing a newsletter within the week and the test results will be included. Milfoil is a fear and will be a major problem if is detected. It will choke the pond, killing natural vegetation and takes major manpower to eradicate.
There is to be some Courtesy Boat Inspection training and anyone wanting to participate should contact Charlie Day at 562-4610. Several individuals form groups of 4 and agree to serve a certain time during each week, whereby each individual only has to contribute a couple of hours once a month. Everyone is urged to get involved. Maynard Murphy is an enormous help at the Snowshoe Club.
Shannon Moss (News) and Andy Hagarty (Portland Police Detective) are to be the Christmas in July judges. Tim stressed that boats must be at The snowshoe Club between 8:45 and 9 p.m. to be judged. No exceptions. Tim added that he would like the judging boat to travel in the opposite direction from usual.
The 3rd Annual Golf Tournament will be Saturday, August 8th at 8 a.m. at Oakdale Country Club, Mexico. The goal is to make money. Approximately $1300 was raised last year – it is a good deal and fun – 18 foursomes are needed.
The Town provided the same contribution this year for Courtesy Boat Inspections ($500) and Pond Water Testing ($650).
The Worthley Pond Association Gift Shop is taking off. Dennis Gallant suggested adding the use of credit cards. Kathy Barrett to check into details. Bill Gates said he may be able to assist with equipment if needed.
The Ice Cream Social is scheduled for Saturday, August 15th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Bus. Christine is offering lunch specials with Ice Cream being the expense of the Association. Invite friends and neighbors, members and non.
David Clement and Orville Lind are working hard at Lake Smart and invite others to sign up to participate.
Tim reported that it appears that the Boat Ramp is on hold for at least 4-5 years as it is not on the master sheet.
Betty Barrett presented the list of officers for election adding it is difficult to get people to make a commitment and wants to stress that most positions are only for a year. She said it is nice to see new members get involved. The nominated slate is as follows:
Tim Placey – President Dan Noyes, Vice-President
Kathy Barrett – Treasurer Kathy Hussey – Secretary
Bill Gates – 3-year Director term
Tim Placey asked if there were any nominations from the floor.
Dave Clement motioned that nominations cease and that the Secretary cast one ballot. Bernie Elfring seconded. Kathy Hussey cast one verbal ballot. Tim Placey welcomed all adding that…….many hands make for light work.
Kathy Barrett mentioned that the Watch for Pedestrian sign is up by the Bus. Tim Placey said he would like to see the speed limit reduced around the pond but doesn’t see it happening. He stressed that we can all set an example.
Tim stated that the school where the meeting is being held is a great school and environmentally friendly in many aspects.
Dave Clements introduced Barbara Welch, DEP to speak on Dirt & Camp Roads. Ms. Welch gave a slide presentation and took questions from the floor. She then moved on to speak on Lake Smart and again took questions from those present. Dave Clement said the Association will assist up to 7 property owners with $150 each toward their efforts to bring their property into compliance. He added that the Soils Conservation District has plant sales annually…very economical.
Orville Lind stated that a suspicious “weed” has been located near the Brackett property / Honeyrun and a sample sent in for identification….which could not be accomplished. Another sample will be provided for identification efforts.
Tim Placey closed the meeting ….once again asking for everyone’s help in supporting the Association projects. He reminded everyone to contact Charles Day if interested in CBI training and thanked Orville Lind for his service as a WPA director and Sheila Delamater (not present) for her service as Vice-President. He stated that Sheila would be assisting with public relations in the future.
Tim returned the gavel, turned over to him last year, to Dave Clement.
10:50 a.m. Joe Morris motioned adjournment; Bernie Elfring seconded; motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Hussey
