The Worthley Pond Association works to protect and preserve the beauty and health of our great pond. Here are some of the projects the WPA has established and continues to promote. We sponsor annual water testing and monitoring which has been done since the early 1990’s by Bruce and Sharon Eastman, our pond’s volunteer monitors, and by engaging Consultant Scott Williams to annually test our water and provide an annual report to the town and the association.
We sponsor funds for members to attend annual lake meetings sponsored by state and private educational groups. For many years we have offered a buffer program to owners to plant/establish plants near the shoreline of their camp lots to capture phosphorus before it enters the pond water. This is a match grant of $150. Contact officers for more information or look under Conservation section of this website. Our largest current effort is to monitor our pond for invasive plants. We do this by sending members to training of identifying these plants. In the summer we ask for may volunteers to help do Courtesy Boat Inspections looking for invasive plants on boats entering our pond at either of our two current boat landings. We also employ persons to supplement the volunteers. Currently we are working to have the town of Peru rebuild East Shore Road in an environmentally conscious way so we do not cause harm to our pristine pond. We are also working with state officials in trying to find a solution for a permanent boat landing. Recently we have offered our assistance to the town in upgrading and maintaining the town operated Worthley Pond spring where many campers and nearby homes get their drinking water.
For fun…. We sponsor such things as a Welcome Back Social, a periodic Around the Pond Yard Sale to help clean out unwanted items, and the last weekend in July we have our Christmas in July celebration by decorating our camps and boats and parade around the pond. In recent years 150 camps and boats have participated. Prizes are awarded!!! In August we have our Ice Cream Social at The Bus lunch wagon.
In the summer we run an Association Store selling a variety of WPA shirts, hats, mugs, sweatshirts and etc. Each August we host the Worthley Pond Open Golf Tournament. We sponsor and continue to communicate through this website thanks to our webmaster, Pam Wintle.
